When deleting site collections within the Office 365 admin centre they are added to a recycle bin. If you navigate to the recycle bin you’ll notice the only option you have is to restore the deleted site collection, but it’s not possible to delete it out of the recycle bin. There maybe instances where you can’t wait 30 days for SharePoint to empty the recycle bin and permanently delete your site collection, so this blog explains how to go about deleting site collections from the recycle bin using SharePoint Online Management Shell.
The first thing you’ll need to do in order to delete a site collection from the recycle bin in Office 365 is to download the SharePoint Online Management Shell (link below)
Once installed, run as administrator and follow the steps below:
1. First you need to connect to the Office 365 SharePoint site using the Connect-SPOService command (example below)
Connect-SPOService -Url https://contoso-admin.sharepoint.com -credential firstname.lastname@example.org
2. When you run the above command you will receive a credentials popup window to add your password for the admin account.
3. Once you’ve submitted your password you’ll be connected. Then all you need to do is run the Remove-SPODeletedSite command to remove the site collection (example below)
Remove-SPODeletedSite -Identity “<Your Site Collection URL>”
4. You will be prompted to answer yes (Y) or no (N) in response to if you are sure you want to delete. Select Y and the site will be removed.
