It is important to consider all the possible requirements needed to install or upgrade to SharePoint 2019. Specific hardware and software requirements which will be explained in some detail below are essential to meet to avoid possible mistakes and malfunction.

Hardware requirements

Stretched farms for SharePoint Server 2019 are supported. For stretched farms there needs to be

  • a highly consistent intra-farm latency of <1 ms one way, 99.9% of the time over a period of ten minutes.
  • the bandwidth speed must be at least 1 gigabit per second.

It has to be note that the intra-farm latency of <1 ms one way, 99,9% of the time over a period of ten minutes and the bandwidth speed of 1 gigabit per second is also required for SharePoint environments with servers that are located in the same datacenter.
For all installation scenarios such as SharePoint Servers and MinRole installations, sufficient hard disk space is essential. This is to ensure space for the base installation and diagnostics such as creating memory dumps and logging. Additional free disk space is also recommended for the daily operations for production use. For day-to-day production environment it is suggested to maintain two times as much free space as you have RAM for production environments.
Microsoft has provided a detailed list of the minimum values for installations on servers on their website to help determine whether the necessary requirements are met.

Software requirements

There are minimum software requirements to install SharePoint Server 20019.  These requirements apply to server farm with a single server in the farm and server farm with multiple servers in the farm. The minimum requirements that have to be met for a database server in a farm are to have either:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 RTM Standard
  • Enterprise Edition or Microsoft SQL Server 2017 RTM Standard
  • Enterprise Edition for Windows.

As a guide, ‘The Microsoft SharePoint Products Preparation tool can provide assistance in  the installation of the software prerequisites. Microsoft’s website recommends checking the internet connection as necessary for the download. Furthermore, the criteria for SharePoint 2019 include having a server operating system such as Windows Server 2016 Standard or Datacenter or Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter.

If SharePoint is already installed, you should have either:

  • Windows Server 2016 Standard or Datacenter (Desktop Experience)
  • Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter (Desktop Experience) to proceed.

SharePoint Server 2019 supports drives that are formatted with the Resilient File System (ReFS). Moreover, SharePoint 2019 needs a minimum of an Active Directory 2003 native forest and domain functional level as it does not support single label domain names.

Best-practice Active Directory domain names consist of one or more subdomains that are combined with a top-level domain that is separated by a dot character (e.g. spyndl.com or corp.spyndl.com). Checking the forest functional level in Active Directory can be done by visiting the “administrative tools” menu and clicking to “Active Directory Domains and Trusts”. Afterwards, proceed by right clicking on the root domain, find your way to “Properties”. There under the “General” tab you can find your “Domain functional levels”, or alternatively, “Forest functional levels” for specific information. A key feature of SharePoint 2019 is the constant availability of suggestions and guidance. In fact, if feeling inexperienced or unprepared, Products Preparation Tool can be helpful tool in assisting you to install the needed software prerequisites for SharePoint 2019. Assistance is additionally provided directly by Microsoft’s website.

Licencing

Determining the type of licencing required for SharePoint 2019 is based on three factors: the capabilities that are used; how the service is deployed; where the system is going to be hosted. SharePoint does support intranet, extranet and Internet applications but does that from a single, integrated platform. Therefore, all licencing is done on a per-user basis to ensure the perfect fit for every situation. In fact, SharePoint Online is available to be:

  • purchased as a standalone plan
  • included as part of Office 365 plans

In comparison, for on-premises, intranet sites will be licenced with a Server/Client Access License model. Client Access Licences are required for each individual or device accessing the SharePoint 2019 server. In SharePoint 2019, for extranet and Internet sites scenarios, no CALs are required for external users.
